The nine-day search for 33-year-old Katlyn Harp ended in tragedy over the weekend when her body was discovered stuffed inside a green metal box on a remote Pennsylvania property — a property once owned by her husband, Vincent Harp.
But in a dramatic twist, it wasn’t police who found Katlyn. According to a criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE, it was her sister, Harper Lane, who tracked down the grim scene and alerted authorities.
Lane first reported Katlyn missing on June 20 after she failed to answer their usual daily call. The sisters shared their locations through the Life360 app, and Harper noticed that Katlyn’s location hadn’t updated since the previous day — setting off alarm bells.
Local Hemlock Township police began the initial investigation, speaking to family and friends, but the case was turned over to Pennsylvania State Police two days later with no breakthroughs.
Vincent Harp was brought in for questioning on June 23. According to the complaint, his timeline of events surrounding his wife’s disappearance was riddled with gaps and inconsistencies. He allegedly omitted key locations he had visited and failed to mention interactions with Katlyn.
In the days that followed, troopers uncovered surveillance footage of Vincent at a Sunoco gas station on June 20 — the day Katlyn vanished — asking for gloves. He also sold a utility vehicle on June 24, just a day after speaking with investigators.
That same vehicle was tested and returned a presumptive positive for human blood, the complaint states.
Even more telling was security footage showing Vincent driving his pickup truck on June 20 with a green metal box — the very one Katlyn would later be found in — in the truck bed.
On June 29, the investigation took a sharp turn — thanks to Harper Lane’s relentless efforts. While searching a 40-acre, forested property once owned by Vincent, she stumbled upon a green metal box approximately 180 yards from a cliffside.
She immediately called troopers, who arrived and cut the lock. Inside were human remains. A tattoo confirmed the identity: it was Katlyn Harp.
Cell phone records later placed Vincent in the area of the property twice on June 21, the day after Katlyn disappeared.
Vincent Harp was arrested hours after Lane’s discovery. He has been charged with:
Criminal homicide
Abuse of a corpse
Tampering with physical evidence
He was arraigned Sunday evening and denied bail. He does not currently have legal representation and is due back in court on July 14.
While law enforcement pieced together the puzzle, it was Harper Lane’s determination that ultimately led to her sister’s recovery — and her brother-in-law’s arrest.
Her courage in the face of loss gave a grieving family the answers they needed, and brought a horrifying story to light.
