Why Donald Trump looks shorter in photos as president sparks ‘body double’ conspiracy theory

Donald Trump has once again become the center of conspiracy theories—this time over claims that he may have used a body double during his recent trip to the Netherlands.

The former—and now 47th—President of the United States is no stranger to wild rumors, but a new wave of speculation gained traction online after a peculiar photo emerged from the NATO summit in The Hague on June 24. The image shows Trump standing alongside other world leaders, including King Willem-Alexander and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan—yet something about it seemed “off” to some viewers.

Despite officially being listed as 6’3″ and 224 lbs during his most recent physical earlier this year, Trump appeared noticeably shorter than expected in the group photo—especially when standing next to the Dutch monarch (reportedly 6’2″) and Erdoğan (around 6’0″). Instead of towering above them, as some anticipated, Trump seemed to shrink into the background.

That’s all it took for social media to erupt.

“That… that is not Trump,” one Twitter user wrote.
“Obviously not the real one. Not tall enough,” said another.
“When I saw the video, I was wondering why he looked so much shorter,” added a third.
One even called the entire scene “creepy.”

Some conspiracy theorists humorously referred to the man in the image as “Mini Trump,” suggesting he was a double sent to attend the event while the real president was allegedly elsewhere. It’s a theory that echoes past online claims about Melania Trump, who has long been rumored (without evidence) to have used a lookalike for public appearances during her time as First Lady.

Still, as amusing as these claims may be, more grounded observers offered a far simpler explanation: optics and perspective.

Several pointed out that differences in camera angles, footwear, posture, and proximity to the camera can significantly impact how someone appears in a photograph—especially in group shots where everyone isn’t perfectly aligned.

“I think he just looks short here because the King of the Netherlands is 6’5. Let’s not get carried away,” one skeptical Twitter user posted (though the King is officially listed at 6’2″).

Others noted that varying shoe soles, especially among world leaders who often wear custom or lifted footwear, can easily create the illusion of different heights. A slight lean forward or backward, a tilt in the ground, or standing slightly behind another person can all make a big difference visually.

In the photo, Trump stands just slightly behind the others, and his posture appears more relaxed, which could add to the perceived height difference.

Despite the rational explanations, the conspiracy theory has gained enough traction that UNILAD has reached out to the White House for comment. As of now, no official response has been issued.

Whether it was just a trick of the lens or something more theatrical, the photo has certainly reignited a favorite online pastime: analyzing every pixel of Donald Trump’s public appearances.

And while most serious observers roll their eyes at the body double theory, one thing is certain—wherever Trump goes, speculation follows.
