Man Accused of Murdering His Mother and Sister — Whose Children Were Home as Victims Were Shot Dead

A Troubled Past and Early Warnings
Court documents obtained by PEOPLE paint a disturbing picture of Mitchell’s long-standing mental health and substance abuse struggles — and raise alarming questions about whether this tragedy could have been prevented.

Back in 2017, Mitchell’s grandparents filed a petition to have him involuntarily committed, citing fears for their safety and concern for his mental state. According to the petition, Mitchell had a history of substance abuse, violent outbursts, and terrifying behavior toward his immediate family.

On June 18, 2017, just days before a court-mandated intervention, Mitchell allegedly threatened his mother, stepfather, and sister, laying out knives on a bed and carrying one on his person. The petition further alleges that he punched holes in the walls and was later arrested for terroristic threatening, prompting family members to seek emergency help.

A judge later determined that there was “clear and convincing evidence” that Mitchell was not only addicted to drugs or alcohol, but also “homicidal, suicidal, or gravely disabled.” He was ordered to undergo a detoxification program for up to 21 days — a short-term solution to what now appears to have been a long-term crisis.

Fast forward nearly eight years to the day, and those early fears seem to have become a horrifying reality. On June 22, 2025, Mitchell allegedly carried out the very kind of violence his family once warned about.

Though Mitchell has a criminal history of non-violent drug offenses, this is the first time he has been charged with a violent crime. Police have not yet released information on a possible motive, and the investigation remains active and ongoing, according to a BPD public information officer.

Community in Mourning
As news of the murders has spread, the local community has been left reeling from the shock. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by friends of the victims’ surviving relatives to help cover funeral expenses for the three family members whose lives were abruptly and violently ended.

“This is a heartbreaking situation,” said one neighbor who declined to be identified. “They were good people. No one deserves this.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the case — including those who may have had contact with Mitchell in the days leading up to the killings — to come forward as they continue to piece together the full timeline of events.

As Mitchell awaits formal charges and court proceedings, one thing is painfully clear: a family that once sounded the alarm over their loved one’s downward spiral is now gone, and the echoes of their warnings haunt every word in the court files
