3 Former Hospital Staffers Arrested on Suspicion of Manslaughter for Killing 7 Babies

Three former senior staff members at the hospital where convicted child killer Lucy Letby worked have been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, reigniting questions about institutional accountability in one of the U.K.’s most horrifying medical scandals.

Cheshire Constabulary confirmed on Monday, June 30, that the arrests were made in connection with the actions—or inactions—of leadership at the Countess of Chester Hospital during 2015 and 2016, the same years Letby carried out her killing spree in the neonatal unit.

“These arrests relate to individuals who formed part of the hospital’s senior leadership team at the time,” said Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes in a statement to PEOPLE. “It is important to stress that these arrests do not affect Lucy Letby’s convictions for multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.”

All three individuals have since been released on bail as the investigation continues.

Letby, a neonatal nurse, was convicted in August 2023 of murdering seven newborns and attempting to kill six more while working at the hospital. In a separate retrial in July 2024, she was found guilty of the attempted murder of an eighth baby, a girl, and received her 15th life sentence. Letby has consistently denied all charges.

In October 2023, following the conclusion of Letby’s initial trial, authorities opened a corporate manslaughter investigation focused on the leadership of the Countess of Chester Hospital. According to police, the probe is examining whether senior officials failed in their duty of care amid a noticeable spike in infant deaths and unexplained collapses.

“The scope of the investigation was expanded in March 2025 to include gross negligence manslaughter, which targets the potentially reckless decisions or inaction of specific individuals,” said the statement from Cheshire Constabulary.

The broader inquiry now encompasses both the Countess of Chester Hospital and Liverpool Women’s Hospital, covering neonatal incidents from 2012 to 2016.

The statement emphasized that these charges relate to individual responsibility, distinguishing them from corporate manslaughter, which involves systemic failings within an organization.

Letby was first arrested in 2018 and detained twice more in subsequent years. During her trial, which began in October 2022, colleagues testified about her unusual behavior, and the prosecution argued she had deliberately injected infants with air and milk in fatal doses. The case exposed serious concerns about how hospital management responded—or failed to respond—to alarming patterns in the unit.

“This remains an ongoing and highly sensitive investigation,” police added, warning that timelines remain uncertain as detectives continue to sift through extensive evidence and witness testimony.
