The US has seen indications that Iran is making preparations to attack US military installations in the Middle East, including the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, according to two officials familiar with the matter. American officials have been preparing for the likelihood that Iran could target US facilities in the wake of this weekend’s strikes.
Qatar has temporarily closed its airspace amid rising tensions in the Middle East, citing imminent threats of Iranian retaliation after U.S. airstrikes on three of Iran’s most sensitive nuclear facilities. The move, announced by the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, is the most significant regional response yet to what is being described as a potential tipping point in the long-standing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The U.S. strikes—authorized by President Donald Trump as part of “Operation Midnight Hammer”—targeted Iran’s underground nuclear enrichment facilities at Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan on Saturday night. Among the most vulnerable is Al Udeid Air Base, located just outside Doha, which houses thousands of American troops and serves as a major command center for U.S. military operations across the Middle East.
Citing “the evolving regional security situation and the elevated threat level,” Qatari officials ordered the temporary closure of the nation’s airspace, impacting all incoming and outgoing commercial and military flights. While officials stressed that the measure is “precautionary and short-term,” the announcement triggered immediate flight diversions and cancellations, including Qatar Airways’ operations, one of the busiest carriers in the region.
