As Democrats scrambled to respond to President Donald Trump’s surprise strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities Saturday night, one former Democratic Party strategist is pushing back—against his own party.
Dan Turrentine, a veteran Democratic advisor who previously worked for Hillary Clinton during her Senate tenure and for former Colorado Governor Jared Polis when he served in Congress, slammed what he called the “unhinged” and reactionary calls for impeachment coming from within Democratic ranks. He said they reflected not a measured constitutional concern, but an emotional overreaction he bluntly labeled as “Trump Derangement Syndrome” (TDS).
The operation, dubbed “Midnight Hammer,” involved over 125 U.S. aircraft and precision strikes on three of Iran’s core nuclear facilities, including Fordow and Natanz. Though the Pentagon lauded the mission as a tactical success, Democratic leaders immediately raised alarm over the president’s unilateral military action—calling it potentially unconstitutional and grounds for impeachment.
Turrentine disagreed vehemently. “It was too depressing to write this last night, after we got off air, so I went to bed,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “But it needs to be said by more Democrats: this was not an impeachable offense. Trump did not need congressional approval for one precision attack under the circumstances—just as President Obama didn’t when striking Bin Laden.”
