A Tennessee sheriff’s deputy is in critical condition after being brutally attacked during a live broadcast of On Patrol: Live, shocking both viewers and law enforcement officers present at the scene.
Deputy Dalton Swanger of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office was responding to a 911 call reporting gunfire in a residential neighborhood in Powell, near Knoxville, on the night of June 21. Accompanied by fellow officers and a camera crew from the popular television series, Swanger attempted to apprehend 44-year-old Christopher Hensley, who had fled into a wooded area behind his home.
Bodycam and broadcast audio captured officers shouting “Sheriff’s Office!” as they moved in with weapons drawn, believing Hensley may have been armed. As they closed in, Hensley reportedly began yelling obscenities—and moments later, Swanger suddenly collapsed to the ground.
According to On Patrol: Live co-host Tom Rizzo, the studio fell silent as the horrifying scene unfolded live on air.
“His mates dragged him to safety to render aid. As Dalton tried to stand, he said, ‘I’m going to be heavy,’” Rizzo recalled in a heartfelt Facebook post.
Swanger was rushed to the hospital and placed in intensive care with a severe head injury believed to have been caused by a blow to the head with a rock. His condition remains critical but stable, according to updates from the Knox County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect, Christopher Hensley, was quickly apprehended and now faces multiple charges, including:
Attempted second-degree murder
Aggravated assault on a first responder
Domestic assault
Possession of a firearm with intent to go armed
Manufacturing, delivery, and possession of a controlled substance
A GoFundMe campaign created to support Deputy Swanger and his family during his recovery has already raised over $75,000. The fundraiser notes that the deputy, who often worked multiple jobs, is now unable to do so, and his family is also facing lost income and unexpected expenses.
“Deputy Swanger has dedicated his life to protecting our community,” the page reads. “Now it’s our turn to stand by him and his loved ones in their time of need.”
In a recent update, the Sheriff’s Office stated:
“Deputy Swanger remains in the Trauma ICU; his condition is critical but stable. Visitors are restricted to allow him the rest he needs.”
Sheriff Tom Spangler vowed to seek justice, saying:
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Swanger and his family during this challenging time. We are fully committed to investigating this attack and using every resource available to ensure the person responsible is held accountable.”
