Bowling Coach Kills Mich. Teen in Murder-Suicide — Stepdad Shows ‘Disturbing Emails’

These emails may offer clues to Leist’s state of mind leading up to the killing, though authorities have not released further details publicly.

There was initial confusion about Leist’s connection to the local school system. A June 17 press release from the sheriff’s office stated that he was not employed by the Bedford School District.

During the press conference, Sheriff Goodnough clarified that Leist had served as a volunteer coach for a youth bowling club that practiced at Forest View Lanes — a community bowling alley — but had no official role with Bedford High School.

As investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, the Bedford community is reeling from the loss of a vibrant young woman just weeks after she graduated high school.

In a heartfelt message shared on Facebook, Bedford Public Schools Superintendent Carl Shultz paid tribute to Smith, describing her as “an extraordinary young woman.”

“Gwen was a gifted student who excelled academically, and her talents extended far beyond the classroom,” he wrote. “She was a passionate artist in our music programs and a standout athlete on our bowling team. Most of all, Gwen will be remembered for her kindness, her bright spirit, and the joy she brought to those around her.”

Counseling services have been made available to students, staff, and community members affected by the tragedy. As the investigation moves forward, Smith’s family and friends are left to mourn a life full of promise that ended far too soon.
