Another kayaker rushed to their aid, but the alligator redirected its attack, latching onto the rescuer’s life jacket and dragging him underwater. In a desperate act of courage, the unnamed man jabbed his fingers into the gator’s eyes. He then tore off his life vest, which the reptile swam away with, offering a narrow window for escape.
Wildlife officials later identified the alligator as measuring over 8 feet in length. It was captured and euthanized shortly after the attack.
Christiane Salvador was airlifted to Osceola Regional Hospital, where surgeons began treating her catastrophic injuries. According to ABC17News, her arm was nearly torn off in the attack, and she is expected to undergo multiple reconstructive surgeries in the coming months.
While officials have not confirmed what provoked the assault, reptile expert Kim Titterington told 7News Miami that the alligator was likely a mother defending her young. “If a group of 20 people walked through your backyard, you’d feel threatened too,” she said. “Female gators with hatchlings are extremely protective—they’re not just defending against humans, but also against rival males.”
The attack underscores the risks of entering wild habitats, especially during nesting season. Wildlife authorities urge caution and vigilance when navigating waters known to be home to alligators, especially during the warmer months.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Polk County Fire Rescue have not yet released additional details, but an internal review is underway.
