For seven long months, a gentle dog named Lancer waited in silence at the City of Mobile Animal Services shelter in Alabama. Day after day, he sat patiently in his kennel, watching other dogs come and go—adopted, loved, chosen. But no one ever came for him. Not one single person asked to meet him.
Still, Lancer never gave up.
Every time someone passed by his kennel, Lancer had a quiet way of asking for affection. He’d press his body close to the gate and slowly extend one paw through the bars, as if to say, “Please, give me a chance.”

“Whenever someone would walk past his kennel, he would stick out his paw in an attempt for someone to hold it,” said Mary Kate Hale, digital media manager for City of Mobile Animal Services.
Lancer’s sweet gesture touched the hearts of staff and volunteers. Despite being constantly overlooked, he remained full of love and goofy charm. He adored peanut butter, ran joyful zoomies in the yard, and would sprawl out like a frog in the shade during naps.
“Lancer is known for his sweet nature and love of peanut butter,” Hale shared. “After a round of zoomies, he can be found napping in a shaded spot with his legs sprawled out like a frog’s.”
But for all his lovable quirks, Lancer remained invisible—until one simple moment changed his life.
One day, a shelter volunteer captured a photo of Lancer doing his now-signature move: gently reaching out with his paw. The image, paired with a short caption about his tender heart, was posted on the shelter’s Facebook page.

And the internet did the rest.
“Within 24 hours of being posted on Facebook, Lancer caught the attention of his future dad, Nick,” Hale said.
Nick saw more than a dog behind bars. He saw the longing in Lancer’s eyes. The gentle plea in that outstretched paw. And he knew—this was his dog.
Soon after, Lancer walked out of the shelter for the last time.

Now, he’s home. Surrounded by toys, treats, soft beds, and unconditional love. And every time he lifts his paw, it’s no longer met with silence. His new dad is always there to hold it back.
After seven months of waiting, Lancer’s paw finally found the hand it had been reaching for all along.
