After 640 Days in a Shelter, “Princess” Louise Finally Finds Her Forever Home—and Melts Millions of Hearts

After nearly two years of waiting, “Princess” Louise, a 4-year-old terrier mix, has finally found her forever home—and in doing so, she’s captured the hearts of millions around the world.

In a heartwarming Instagram video shared on June 22 by @Rachels.Dogs and @FourLegsGoodNYNJ, Louise is seen leaving Rockland Green CARES Animal Shelter in Pomona, New York, surrounded by cheering staff and volunteers. The video, set to Good Neighbours’ “Home,” has since gone viral, amassing over a million likes and sparking an outpouring of love and support from animal lovers across the globe.

“The way she took one last look back 🥹,” the caption reads.

“Two weeks ago, the perfect applicant came along for our longest shelter resident, Louise. After a few meets, we knew this was her forever.”

The clip shows Louise walking through the shelter for the last time, led by a tearful staff member. As she reaches the door, her tail wagging, she’s handed off to her new adopter—her “person.” But before hopping into the car, Louise stops and gives one final glance back at the people who loved and cared for her during her 640-day stay.

“Go get it, Louise. You waited long enough, sweetie!” the caption continues.

For shelter workers like Rachel Oldenburger, the moment was more than just a farewell—it was a symbol of hope.

“To see her be overlooked so many times, and then to go viral for the world to see gives me so much hope for all the shelter dogs around the country who just need that ONE person,” said Oldenburger, adoption and foster coordinator at Four Legs Good.

“Shelter dogs are fabulous dogs,” she added. “I hope Louise’s story inspires even just one person to go adopt a local shelter dog.”

A Viral Moment With a Bigger Message
While the video is undeniably emotional, it carries a deeper message about the power of pet adoption and the countless animals still waiting in shelters across the country.

“Our staff clapped her out to celebrate this huge win for Louise, but also to keep the hope alive that their people will come,” the post reads.

“We have to keep showing up for them. Their people will eventually come.”

The post ends with a heartfelt plea to the public:

“Please, please, please consider adopting a shelter dog. They need us more than ever, and you quite literally are saving the life of a dog in need—and inspiring the people who are writing the stories for the rest of their futures.”

Louise’s story is a powerful reminder that patience, hope, and love can change a life—and that every dog, no matter how long they’ve waited, deserves a happy ending.
