A prominent professor at Georgetown University is facing a firestorm of criticism and growing calls for his termination after posting a controversial message on X (formerly Twitter), in which he expressed his “hope” that Iran would carry out a symbolic strike on a U.S. military base following recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
Dr. Jonathan Brown, who holds the Alwaleed bin Talal Chair of Islamic Civilization at Georgetown’s prestigious School of Foreign Service, ignited outrage online on Sunday with a thread that many perceived as sympathetic to Iran and dismissive of the dangers posed to American military personnel.
“I’m not an expert, but I assume Iran could still get a bomb easily,” Brown wrote in the post, which quickly went viral. “I hope Iran does some symbolic strike on a base, then everyone stops.”
The professor’s remarks came less than 24 hours after President Donald Trump ordered a series of precision strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, a move intended to cripple Iran’s weapons development infrastructure and de-escalate the threat posed to regional allies, especially Israel.
The Pentagon has confirmed that no U.S. casualties were reported and that the strikes were “targeted and successful.”
Brown’s post, however, quickly spiraled beyond that initial statement. He continued with a tirade that veered into explicit language and mockery of pro-Israel groups and analysts:
