The situation is unfolding rapidly as US defense and intelligence agencies brace for broader retaliatory strikes in the aftermath of Washington’s weekend assault on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Sources confirm that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine are in the White House Situation Room alongside senior advisers, closely monitoring the developments. The White House has not issued an official public statement yet, but internal coordination with CENTCOM and allied partners in the Gulf is underway.
Earlier today, Iranian state television announced that Tehran had begun a direct military operation targeting the US air base at Al Udeid in Qatar, the largest American military installation in the Middle East. President Donald Trump had visited the base last month, becoming the first sitting president to do so since its establishment in 2003.
“No visit in the Gulf would be complete without stopping to salute the people who keep America safe, strong, and free,” President Trump had said during his May 17 address to the troops stationed there.
This latest escalation comes after US forces carried out precision airstrikes against Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. In response, Iranian leadership has vowed retaliation, calling the strikes an act of aggression.
