She Was Touring Her New House. Then She Spotted a Dog Tied Up in the Backyard

When April Billak began touring what would soon become her new home, she expected to fall in love with the property — not have her heart broken.

As she stepped into the backyard, something immediately caught her eye: a senior dog, tied up and left completely alone.

“I was in shock,” Billak tells PEOPLE. “I couldn’t believe someone would just leave behind a dog they had for 10 years.”

After some investigation, Billak discovered the heartbreaking truth — the previous homeowners had abandoned the 10-year-old dog, along with a cat, when they moved out. In the real estate documents, the sellers even noted that they “did not wish to take the pets” and would be leaving them behind “if desired” by the incoming owners.

“We were worried about what would happen to the dog,” Billak recalls. “So we made sure to address it in the purchase agreement, just in case something worse happened.”

Billak didn’t hesitate. As soon as her offer was accepted, she untied the dog — now lovingly named Molly — and welcomed her into her new life.

Today, Molly is living a completely different story. She shares her new home with Billak and her other dogs and has captured the hearts of millions online. Billak documents Molly’s transformation on TikTok, where the first video about the abandoned pup has racked up over 33 million views.

“She’s amazing,” Billak says. “She fits right in. She’s spoiled rotten and lies around like she owns the place. She’s just such a sweet dog.”

For those who might encounter similar situations, Billak offers simple but powerful advice: “Do whatever you can to help the dog.”

“I’m not trying to judge the people who left her. I don’t know their circumstances,” she says. “I just wanted to make sure Molly was safe and would be okay.”

She also hopes Molly’s story will inspire more people to adopt rather than shop.

“There are so many great dogs in shelters right now,” Billak adds. “Our local shelter does incredible work, but they’re overwhelmed.”

As for Molly, her story is a reminder that sometimes, the best family members are the ones you never saw coming.
