I Lost My Job After Stopping to Help a Stranger-Three Days Later, an Unexpected Call Changed Everything

I stopped to help a woman who collapsed beside the road.

Three days later, I was offered the job of a lifetime.

But in between those two moments, I lost the job I had spent three years building my career around.

And for a while, I wasn’t sure whether doing the right thing had just cost me everything.

“What the hell do you mean you were helping somebody?”

My boss’s voice cut through the office so sharply that even the interns near the copy room stopped talking.

I was standing there with my laptop bag hanging from one shoulder, my tie crooked, and my chest still heaving after running across the parking lot.

Behind Nick, the conference room was empty.

The clients were gone.

On the wall, the presentation I had spent half the night perfecting was still glowing on the monitor.

It looked almost cruel.

All those hours.

All that preparation.

All for a meeting I had missed by minutes.

“There was an emergency,” I said, trying to catch my breath. “A woman collapsed beside the road. She grabbed her chest and went down right in front of me. I couldn’t just leave her there.”
