As Trump vows March 4 tariffs for Mexico, Sheinbaum ‘hopes’ she can talk to US President

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday said that she hopes to talk to US President Donald Trump about his sweeping tariff measures that are expected to hit the country’s economy.

Trump has announced that his proposed 25 per cent tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods will go into effect from March 4 as drugs are still pouring into the US despite his warnings.

“We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled,” POTUS said on Truth Social.

Meanwhile, Sheinbaum has sent a high-level delegation to Washington in search of an agreement and “we hope that we can talk to President Trump once these meetings take place.”

“I hope we can reach an agreement and that on March 4 we can announce something else,” she said shortly after Trump’s announcement.

Earlier, Trump had reversed his plans on imposing tariffs on Mexico after Sheinbaum said that she would deploy 10,000 more troops to the Mexico-US border.

The meetings in Washington will be held between Mexico’s foreign, economy, finance, defence and security ministers and their counterparts including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
