A woman who chose to marry a convicted murderer on death row, despite knowing he was facing execution, has opened up about the emotional final moments she shared with her husband before his death.
Tiana Krasniqi, 31, stood by James Broadnax even after he was sentenced to death for his involvement in the 2008 murders of two men. Now, following his execution on April 30, 2026, she is remembering the final words he said to her during their last moments together.
Broadnax was just 19 years old when the killings took place. Although his cousin reportedly accepted full responsibility for the murders, Broadnax was also convicted and sentenced to death.
Despite years of legal efforts to challenge their convictions and overturn the death sentences, their appeals were unsuccessful. Broadnax was ultimately executed at the age of 37.
For Krasniqi, however, her relationship with him was about more than the crimes that had placed him on death row. The couple married just weeks before his execution, following a relationship that began through her academic research into racial disparities within the criminal justice system.
How Tiana Krasniqi Met the Man She Would Eventually Marry
Krasniqi first crossed paths with Broadnax while researching racial disparities as part of her studies in international human rights law.
What began as an academic interest eventually developed into a personal relationship, despite the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Broadnax’s life and impending execution.
In an interview with This Morning on April 13, she explained that marrying someone on death row was far from a traditional wedding experience.
The ceremony took place behind glass, with strict prison regulations preventing physical contact between the couple.
“It’s pretty much the same behind glass again,” she explained, according to Tyla.
“Texas has a very strict rule about no contact with death row inmates. So, yeah, it’s a very quick 20-minute ceremony. You have an officiant, you say your vows, and that’s it. And it’s time to go.”
Despite the restrictions, Krasniqi described Broadnax as someone she had come to know beyond his criminal conviction and the label of a death row inmate.
She spoke warmly about his personality, intelligence, and the way he communicated with her throughout their relationship.
“He’s very intelligent, very well spoken, very respectful. He’s just your normal person … I know a lot of people would say, ‘You haven’t spent a day or a night with him,’ but you speak to somebody every single day for 6-7 hours a day, so you kind of go through the ups and downs.”
She also insisted that there was more to Broadnax than the crimes for which he had been convicted.
“It’s just his personality and who he is as a person. Believe it or not, he does have a moral compass.”
For Krasniqi, the relationship had become deeply personal, and she remained determined to stand by him even as the date of his execution approached.
The Emotional Final Meeting Before His Execution
In an interview with LADbible, Krasniqi revealed the heartbreaking details of her final meeting with Broadnax, describing an emotional encounter that she says will remain with her for the rest of her life.
Knowing that their time together was running out, she tried to bring him some comfort by getting him a few of his favorite snacks and drinks.
She brought him his favorite Powerade and beef jerky, hoping he would eat something despite the circumstances and the fact that he was struggling emotionally.
“I got him his favorite Powerade and beef jerky because he couldn’t eat. So I said ‘just eat something’ and he was just crying,” she recalled.
But it was what Broadnax said next that left the deepest impression on her.
According to Krasniqi, he leaned back and spoke words that she says she will never forget.
“I never knew how loved I could be. I never knew I was worthy of being fought for.”
The statement reflected the emotional connection the couple had developed and the significance of having someone stand beside him during the final chapter of his life.
Krasniqi said the moment left her struggling to find the right words or even understand how to comfort someone who knew his death was only hours away.
“How do you console somebody who is at the last hours of his life?” she asked.
It was a moment in which ordinary gestures of affection and reassurance carried an extraordinary emotional weight.
His Final Words to His Wife Before He Died
As Broadnax’s execution approached, Krasniqi said he continued expressing his love for her, repeating a message that she would carry with her long after he was gone.
She recalled how he repeatedly called her “queen” while urging her not to give up.
“He was like, ‘I love you queen, don’t give up, I love you queen, don’t give up.'”
But what happened immediately afterward became the most traumatic part of her account.
Krasniqi described watching Broadnax as he began experiencing the final moments of his life.
As he was saying the word “don’t,” she recalled that his head suddenly jerked backward. He then appeared to gasp before his eyes rolled upward and his body dropped.
“As he said ‘don’t’, his head jerked back and he went [gasping noise] and then his eyes rolled up and he dropped. And I screamed.”
Her account paints a devastating picture of the final moments she witnessed, as the man she had married only weeks earlier was executed.
For Krasniqi, the experience was not simply the end of a relationship. It was the loss of someone she had chosen to stand beside despite the controversy, criticism, and extraordinary circumstances surrounding their marriage.
Although Broadnax’s execution brought an end to his legal battle, his wife’s memories of their final conversation remain particularly powerful.
His words about finally feeling loved and worthy of being fought for, followed by his repeated request for her not to give up, are the moments Krasniqi says she will never forget.
