A year ago, I never could have imagined how quickly my entire life would be turned upside down.
At the center of it all was a woman who had never done anything to hurt me.
My mother-in-law, Valerie.
When she was diagnosed with terminal cancer, my husband, Zion, was constantly telling me how overwhelmed he was with work. He said he couldn’t always be available for her appointments, errands, and daily needs.
So I stepped in.
I drove Valerie to her medical appointments.
I picked up her prescriptions.
I cooked her meals.
I helped around the house.
And on the hardest days, when the pain and exhaustion became too much, I stayed beside her simply so she wouldn’t have to face those moments alone.
Valerie was a wonderful woman.
Whatever problems existed between me and Zion, she wasn’t responsible for any of them.
I couldn’t bring myself to walk away from her when she needed someone most.
Over time, caring for her became more than an obligation.
I genuinely loved her.
She trusted me, and I treasured that trust.
Zion constantly thanked me for everything I was doing for his mother.
At the time, I believed those words were sincere.
I had no idea that while I was spending my days caring for the woman he called his mother, the two people I trusted most were betraying me in the cruelest way imaginable.
