I saved a three-year-old girl in the ER and raised her as my own.
Then, on her eighteenth birthday, a mysterious box arrived at our front door with a note that made my stomach drop:
“YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT SHE’S BEEN HIDING FROM YOU.”
At first, I thought it was some cruel joke.
I had no idea that opening that box would make me question everything I thought I knew about the daughter I had spent fifteen years raising.
Fifteen years earlier, I was working as a trauma surgeon in the emergency room when the little girl was rushed through the doors after a horrific car accident.
Her parents had been killed at the scene.
She was only three years old.
And her life was hanging by a thread.
I still remember the urgency of that night. The noise of the emergency room. Nurses moving quickly around me. Monitors beeping. Doctors shouting instructions. And in the middle of all of it was a tiny girl who had already lost everything.
